What qualifications do I need to start the course?
It is recommended that you will have achieved a grade B in GCSE Textiles as well as a positive attitude to independent and group working, and an excellent attendance record.
What will I be studying and how is it assessed?
AS Teaching units
TEXT 1: Materials, Components and Application.
This unit focuses on fibres, yarns, fabrics and their working properties. It also develops your understanding of design technology and the use of design and practice in the human context as well as product manufacture, industrial and commercial practice.
2 hour written exam Worth 50% of the AS Worth 25% of the A2
TEXT 2: Learning Through Designing and Making
This unit involves the designing and making of coursework products and the completion of a portfolio over 50 hours. Worth 50% of the AS or 25% of the A2
A2 Teaching units - How is it assessed?
TEXT 3: Design and Manufacture
This unit enables candidates to further develop their knowledge and understanding of materials and components, design and market influences and processes and manufacture.
2 hour written examWorth 25% of the A2
TEXT 4: Design and Making Practice
This is a design-and-make unit where knowledge of the AS and A2 subject content is applied to the design and manufacture of candidatesí own projects.
Approx 50 hours coursework Worth 25% of the A2.
What skills will I develop?
You will learn new practical skills, some of which are challenging and complex. You will learn the underlying principles of the subject and the fashion industry and you will learn to become more independent and to solve problems yourself
