Saints Stumble into Second Round!
Whitby High 0 – St. Chad`s 1
Cheshire Cup, 1st round
The 6th form football team played their first competitive game of the season in the first round of the Cheshire Schools` u-18 Cup and had to battle throughout the 80 minutes to take a well-earned 1-0 win away at the Ellesmere Port school.
Whitby High dominated the early exchanges, as Chad`s adapted to their new system and got to know their new team-mates. As they settled they began to control possession but found their Route One game didn`t suit the tiny pitch.
So, 0-0 at half-time and Chad`s had their best spell early in the second, launching repeated attacks through a lively 5-man midfield and the inevitable winner came when Joe Whitehead got his head on the end of a Scott McLaren free-kick.
The last 10 minutes proved to be a bit hairy with some desperate clearances in the box and Trigger Steele showing all his experience in the thick of it!
Next round sees another road trip to Abbeygate (Chester) or Grange (Hartford) and if the boys make sure they waste less energy on pointless moaning at the referee they should be able to progress to the quarter-finals.
